West Carclaze Multi-Use Trails

St Austell, Cornwall

LHC Design’s landscape team undertook a detailed survey of pedestrian, cycle and horse-riding infrastructure in the St Austell area with the aim of reviewing existing sustainable transport assets and providing detailed proposals for enhancements to the network.

The improved trails would offer locals and residents of the new West Carclaze Garden Village, better choices for leisure and commuting to key local destinations.

The report, produced by LHC in collaboration with Ward William Associates, provided clients Cornwall Council & Eco Bos a comprehensive assessment which highlighted the route condition, signage, street furniture, ease of use and legibility.  Potential improvements to the network were also described, together with costings to allow informed choices to be made.

The project involved a combination of desk based research using GIS mapping together with site survey work which analysed factors such as gradients, heat maps to determine existing popular routes, safety and appropriateness of existing routes and best practice guidance.
