Market Walk Shopping Centre Architectual Enhancements

LHC were commissioned by Teignbridge District Council to deliver an updated masterplan for Newton Abbot Town Centre. As part of this wider project, LHC were asked to produce detailed designs for architectural enhancements to the Market Walk Shopping Centre, to modernise and upgrade the facades and add a canopied roof – with the aim of improving the image of the centre to attract new occupier investment.

The whole ‘walk’ was enclosed with a lightweight glazed canopy structure, elevated off the building to allow good ventilation. New facades to existing shop fronts were rendered and painted a colour from a specific palette. An existing corner building was re-clad with natural stone to match existing prominent corner buildings in the town centre. Windows were replaced and fitted with new metal feature frame surrounds. Feature lights were fitted to walls at a high level illuminating the canopy and street.

Future phases will focus on the neighbouring Market Square as a key civic space and focal point. The plans aim to make the most of the iconic Market Hall as a landmark at the centrepiece of the scheme. Key to the success of the modernisation is being sensitive to the individuality of Newton Abbot.
