Thanks, Glayne for everything – here’s to the next chapter

After nearly 35 years with LHC Design and some amazing results for clients, Director Glayne Price has decided to leave the practice. Glayne has been with us since LHC’s first day in business and leaves at the end of January with our very best wishes.

She’s made a huge impact since her first position with us, starting as a Junior Architectural Technician in 1992 before progressing to associate and various director roles.

After serving as a Director since 2008, Glayne is stepping away from the business to pursue other interests. After a period of reflection who knows where the next steps will take her…

She leaves a legacy of positive work, across the UK but especially in the south-west – where she’s played a pivotal role in establishing the practice while supporting a generation of new and emerging talent in the built environment.

“Over the years that Glayne has been with us, she has played a major part in building LHC at every level,” said fellow director, Rebecca Thurgood. “As a people‑focused business, we recognise that our impact as professionals goes far beyond the quality of our work. How we deliver projects, the standards we set, and the way we look after each other and our clients all matter. Glayne has been central to instilling these qualities in our work and shaping our success.

Her leadership has also carried wider significance. As a business-owner and woman in construction, Glayne has been a powerful advocate and role model, and inspired many to grow in confidence and ambition. Her commitment has left a lasting legacy – not only within LHC, but across our industry.”

Reflecting the way the team now works, we’ve decided not to renew the lease on our Cornwall office. This does not change our existing relationships in Cornwall or the wider region.

A Legacy to be proud of

Glayne’s achievements over the last 35 years span delivery, place-making and supporting our industry.

They include, but aren’t limited to:

West Carclaze Garden Village:

A ‘powerhouse of possibility’, regenerating a former industrial site with a new community of around 1,500 homes.

Glayne has supported this project with Eco-Bos and partners since 2010, leading the team as the project moved from gaining outline consent in 2018 into the delivery of early phases.

Supporting regeneration and place-making:

Glayne has played key roles in shaping successful places for people to live, work and spend time. This includes supporting the regeneration of Liskeard Cattle Market, working with Treveth Holdings to deliver new homes at Gwel Basset, and transforming a Grade II listed mill into the UK’s first University Technical College at the JCB Academy in Uttoxeter, for which she was subsequently presented to the future King of England.

A just reward for a job well done.

Paying it foward

Glayne has dedicated time to supporting the wider industry, championing diversity and inclusion and helping talent to progress. In addition to mentoring roles, this includes a six-year spell as Chair of South West Women in Construction and serving as board member at Cornwall College of which she remains part of during this next era.

Of her time as Chairman of SWWIC, Thelma Thorensen, OBE notes;

South West Women in Construction

“Glayne is a much respected and admired Ambassador and Role Model for what can be achieved by a deep belief in enlightened team working under strong leadership. As our very hard working and extremely successful Chairman, she managed to achieve a much higher profile for SWWIC during her several terms of office which led to a significant increase in membership. Always happy to share her knowledge and experience, she has spoken very ably, on many platforms, to promote the industry as an excellent career choice for women.

Awards and achievements

Winning the ‘Plymouth Women of Achievement Award’ in 2002 was just the beginning of the recognition for her hard work and aptitude, which led to her invitation onto the board as a Director in 2007, and later a shareholder.

In 2016 her numerous project achievements were recognised when she won The European Women in Construction & Engineering Awards ‘Best Woman Architectural Technologist’ category and in 2020 was jointly presented alongside SWWIC, The Michelmores ‘John Laurence Special Contribution Award’. More recently in December 2023 she was delighted to be announced as the winner of the ‘Property & Construction’ category in The West Country Women Awards.

Tribute to a trailblazer

Nigel Blackman, Glayne’s mentor in her early years in practice and work buddy for 24 years comments;

“Glayne’s ‘designer’s eye‘ for architectural detailing made projects enjoyable as we were frequently ‘on the same wavelength’… on many occasions, she’d be one step ahead of me, insisting that ‘this is’ the way forward …and she was usually right!

Working with Glayne has always been fun and never boring. Her achievements, promotions and accolades are solely attributable to her own talent, natural ability and skillset. The next chapter in her career will be exciting wherever it takes her and I am sure she will continue to be a trailblazer and mentor in whatever role she chooses.”

Thelma Sorensen OBE continues;

I am a great admirer of Glayne who is an awesome example of what can be achieved by dedication and skill in her choice of profession while remaining the modest, unassuming, lovely person she has always been. Her role has not followed the traditional route to success.

Not having attended university has not held her back and, by extreme hard work, talent and great determination, she followed a more challenging path of steadily working to achieve impressive status in the world of Architectural Technology and Design.”

Reflecting on her journey over the years, Glayne notes;

“I’ve loved being part of LHC’s story since the start. We’ve achieved so many great results, which I am proud of, and addressed some big challenges together.

I cherish the relationships I’ve made, including clients and colleagues – some of whom will remain as close friends.

But sometimes life comes at you fast and the past 18 months have thrown some curve balls. After 35 years, it’s the right time for me to try something new. I’m so grateful for everything LHC has offered me and wish colleagues and clients all the best for the future.”

Rather than a ‘goodbye’, or even a ‘fond farewell’, we bid Glayne a ‘cheery cheerio’ and know that our paths remain connected whatever the future holds.
