The first visitors have been welcomed at a new state-of-the-art community, performance, gallery and work hub centre perched on the water’s edge in Teignmouth.
Pavilions Teignmouth is a complete redevelopment of the outdated Carlton Theatre. The partnership project has been funded by Teignbridge District Council, the Coastal Communities Fund and Arts Council England to encourage an economic and cultural regeneration of the South Devon town.
The contemporary, new building has a flexible design and includes a 218-seated capacity theatre which folds away to allow for an events space suitable for conferences, weddings and exhibitions.
A selection of work hubs varying in size and shape can be found outside the auditorium and have proven popular with local businesses as all are now reserved.
Set to become a beacon on the seafront, the Pavilions is simple in plan which affords flexibility, will allow the building to have many uses, making it financially efficient in both construction and running costs.
Uncompromisingly contemporary and visually interesting, it will create a draw to the seafront to both visitors and townsfolk alike. Activity can spill out towards the sea, with the first floor View Café, Bar and outdoor terrace enjoying dramatic views across the water thanks to the extensive use of glass, which is a theme throughout the building. The café design was inspired by Teignmouth’s industrial and coastal heritage, whilst complementing the rest of the building’s contemporary feel.
