The LHC designed Culverdale development in Totnes, which collected the national LABC Building Excellence Award for Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development in 2014, was featured as a great example of affordable housing on BBC’s The One Show earlier in the year.

Watch our short film to find out more about the project from LHC Director John Baulch who was responsible for the masterplan and design of the development. He talks about the key ingredients and design features that helped it achieve this major national award.

Our Culverdale development picked up the national award for at the Grand Finals in London on 11 November.

Designed for DCH, the South West’s largest affordable housing provider, the 58 houses and flats sit on a steeply sloping site in the Bridgetown area of Totnes.

The homes were individually designed to cope with the large falls across the site while maintaining privacy and maximising natural light, whilst also drawing on the Totnes vernacular. All are affordable homes with a mix of 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 bedroom units, much needed in an area with a long housing waiting list. The sustainability of the entire area was also considered within the design, which provides new and improved pedestrian and cycle connections to the river and town.
